Puppy Info

Congratulations on welcoming a new family member into your home! Grooming is essential to the well being and health of your dog and the sooner your fur-baby is introduced to grooming, the happier and healthier they will be in the long-run.

Between the ages of 8-16 weeks puppies are at their most trainable age. That’s why it’s imperative to expose your pup to as many new experiences as possible during this period. Getting your pup familiar with grooming during these first few months will help them be more relaxed whilst being groomed throughout their life.

Once your puppy is fully vaccinated (usually at 12 weeks) they can be introduced to professional grooming. The most important goal of the first appointment is to give your puppy a positive introduction to grooming. Your pup will be exposed to lots of new smells, noises and sensations. Our aim is to make this as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for your puppy. We do this by speaking softly to your pup, gently stroking and reassuring them. We want your pooch to perceive grooming as a gentle pampering session that they enjoy.

During their first groom, your puppy will be washed, dried, brushed, nails trimmed, ears cleaned and they’ll receive a trim around their eyes, paw pads and sanitary areas. We will take extra time to complete each process, allowing your pup to become familiar with the new sensations. We recommend that the second groom be completed not long after the first (2 weeks later would be ideal). The second groom will include the addition of a full body clip, if required.

What can I do at home to help my puppy with grooming?

Hold paws, tail, face, legs and ears daily for a few seconds at a time. Praise your dog for allowing you to do this if they are being well behaved.

Brush and comb your dog’s coat thoroughly several times per week, even if he/she is being a bit sooky. You don’t need to do their whole body at once. You can break it up, so that they have their back done one night, legs brushed another, etc. You will need a slicker brush and a comb (we sell these in store if you don’t have them at home). Make sure you are brushing with enough pressure so that you are brushing all the way to the roots of the coat. If your pup is a bit knotted a detangling spray can help.
